Removal

WARNING:
Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on
or near any fuel-related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present
and may be ignited, resulting in possible personal injury. Failure to follow
these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING:
Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not
running. Before repairing or disconnecting any of the fuel system components,
the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of
fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard. Failure to follow these
instructions may result in personal injury.

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section
    310-00
    .

  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section
    303-03
    .

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section
    414-01
    .

  1. CAUTION:
The engine appearance cover is equipped with a noise suppressor. If the
noise suppressor becomes separated from the engine appearance cover it must
be positioned on the intake manifold prior to installing the engine
    appearance cover.

Remove the engine appearance cover and the noise suppressor (if detached).

  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to Section
    303-12
    .

  1. Remove the cowl panel grille. For additional information, refer to Section
    501-02
    .

  1. Disconnect the fuel supply tube spring lock coupling from the fuel rail.
For additional information, refer to Section
    310-00
    .

  1. Remove the 6 bolts and the cross-vehicle brace.

  1. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the fuel pressure sensor electrical connector and vacuum hose.

  1. Disconnect the throttle body electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) hose from the intake manifold.

  1. Disconnect the fuel rail temperature sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module electrical
connector and the vacuum harness from the EGR system module.

  1. Disconnect the EGR system module-to-exhaust manifold tube from the EGR
    system module.

  1. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum supply tube.

  1. Detach the vacuum harness retainers from the LH engine appearance cover
    bracket.

  1. Detach the engine wiring harness from the engine appearance cover
    brackets.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts and the 2 engine appearance cover brackets.

  1. Disconnect the 8 fuel injectors and the radio interference ignition
    capacitor electrical connectors.

  1. Remove the 2 nuts and the engine wiring harness retainer.

  1. Remove the nut and the radio interference ignition capacitor.

  1. Disconnect the 2 throttle body coolant tubes.

  1. NOTE: The throttle body and adapter are shown removed for clarity.
It is not necessary to remove the throttle body and adapter to remove the
    intake manifold.

Remove the 7 bolts and 3 studs in the sequence shown.

  1. Remove the intake manifold and discard the gaskets.

Installation

  1. CAUTION:
Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other
abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches
and gouges, which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to clean the
    surfaces.

    Clean the gasket sealing surfaces.

  1. Install new gaskets, the intake manifold, the 7 bolts and the 3 studs in
    the sequence shown.

    • Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).

  1. Connect the 2 throttle body coolant tubes.

  1. Install the radio interference ignition capacitors and nuts.

    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  1. Install the engine wiring harness retainer and the 2 nuts.

    • Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).

  1. Connect the 8 fuel injectors and the radio interference ignition capacitor
    electrical connectors.
